H5 Bird Flu
On 24 June 2026, South Australia recorded its first confirmed case of H5 bird flu in a vagrant migratory seabird found on a beach on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
The South Australian Government is working with equivalent agriculture, environment and health agencies at a state and national level to coordinate emergency animal disease response activities.
If you come across sick or dead birds or other wildlife:
- Do not touch, move or attempt to rescue the animal.
- Keep a safe distance and prevent others from approaching where possible.
- Record the location and, if it is safe to do so, take a photo.
- Report the sighting to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
Some signs to look for include:
- Multiple sick or dead birds in one location.
- Birds or wildlife that appear lethargic or reluctant to move.
- Difficulty walking or flying, drooping wings or unusual posture.
- Twisting of the neck, staggering or paralysis.
- Respiratory signs such as panting or nasal discharge.
