Government announces support package for businesses impacted by Algal Bloom event
The South Australian and Australian Governments have announced a significant support package, including financial relief payments for impacted commercial fisheries, licenced aquaculture businesses and eligible marine industry businesses.
SA small businesses affected by the harmful algal bloom can now apply for up to $10,000, while commercial fisheries and aquaculture licence holders hardest hit may be eligible for up to $100,000 in support.
Eligible small businesses can access $10,000 grants if they’ve experienced a 30% drop in turnover. This includes:
- Marine or coastal tourism operators
- Charter boat and fishing charter operators
- Marine-based sports/schools (e.g. surf schools)
- Seafood processors and marine/fishing retailers
- Coastal caravan parks, beachfront cafés, and more
For commercial fisheries or aquaculture licence holders significantly impacted, grants of up to $100,000 are available — including:
- Immediate payment of $25,000 for fisheries or aquaculture licence holders forced to close by authorities for more than one month or a 50 per cent reduction in catch/harvest for a three-month period since April.
- Businesses may be eligible for an additional payment of up to $75,000 where a 50 per cent reduction in turnover can also be demonstrated.
- Payments will be tiered based on turnover.
The State Government has committed to processing applications within 15 business days so help gets to those who need it — fast.

Business Networking Event a Vibrant Success!

On Tuesday, 30 July 2024, members of our business community came together at the Normanville Surf Life Saving Club for an energetic evening of connection and collaboration.
More than 50 local operators attended the event and many new faces joined our familiar collaborators, creating a vibrant atmosphere ripe for collaboration, idea exchange and new partnerships.
Attendees heard from guest speakers Sarah Armstrong of Luna, Joel Hirsch of Big Duck Boat Tours, Kerry Cleopatra of eKoo Body and Soul, Phil Palmer of Palmer Ag and Cira Pty Ltd, and Shane Grocke of Yankalilla Normanville Progress Association, who each shared their unique insights.
Following the presentations, guests were given ample time to engage in discussions, ask questions and explore potential collaborations. The open format allowed for meaningful exchanges, with many attendees finding common ground and discussing joint ventures.
With such a positive response, the Do Business team at Council will be working on cost-effective options to provide more regular opportunities for our business community to come together.
The Do Business team is here to provide support and assistance in any way we can and we invite our business operators to connect with us. You can stay informed by following our Do Business Fleurieu Coast Facebook page or reach out to us any time via business@yankalilla.sa.gov.au.
