On Australia Day the District Council of Yankalilla welcomed five new Australian citizens at a citizenship ceremony. Held as an integral part of the Australia Day Celebrations, this ceremony marked a significant moment for individuals hailing from two different countries who chose Australia as their new home.
Mayor Darryl Houston, the Presiding Officer of the ceremony, welcomed the conferees and extended congratulations on behalf of the community. Mayor Houston also shared a message from The Honourable Andrew Giles MP – Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, and Multicultural Affairs that emphasised Australia's standing as one of the world's most successful multicultural societies, with around half of all Australians either born overseas or having at least one parent born abroad.
Each new citizen was gifted a selection of local coastal plants that have been grown by our Community Nursery and a jar of Vegemite.
