Gazania Free Garden Plant Swap
Ready to Get Your Hands in the Earth?
Do you have gazanias in your coastal garden? Now is the perfect time to remove them and replace them with something better.
The District Council of Yankalilla, City of Victor Harbor, Alexandrina Council, Green Adelaide and Landscapes Hills & Fleurieu have partnered to bring you a Gazania Free Garden Plant Swap, a community event supporting healthier gardens and a healthier environment.
Gazanias are a declared weed that spreads rapidly, smothering native plants and reducing habitat for local wildlife. By removing them from your garden, you’re helping protect our region’s natural landscapes and we’d love to reward you for it!
If you live in, or own a home or business within, the District Council of Yankalilla, City of Victor Harbor or Alexandrina Council areas, you can take part in this free event and swap your removed gazanias for local native plants that are waterwise, resilient and attractive to birds, butterflies and other wildlife
What you need to do
- Carefully remove gazanias from your garden (whether it's a single plant or a whole patch).
- Take a photo of the gazanias you removed.
- Dispose of them responsibly into your green organics bin (don’t dump or transport weeds elsewhere).
- Come along, show us your photo and swap it for a bucket of free local native plants suited to your garden.
What you’ll receive
You’ll head home with:
- A bucket of free local native coastal plants
- A Coastal Gardens: Planting Guide
- A Gazania Free Garden sticker for your green organics bin
Why it matters
Gazanias are a high-priority weed in coastal areas, identified through the Southern Fleurieu Coastal Action Plan. They spread easily from gardens into nearby reserves and dunes, where they outcompete native vegetation.
Native coastal plants play an important role in supporting biodiversity by providing food, shelter and habitat for local wildlife. Removing gazanias from your garden helps protect these ecosystems and contributes to broader, coordinated weed control efforts across the region.
Every gazania removed makes a difference.
