Fire Danger Season is Fast Approaching: Start Preparing Now
With Fire Danger Season approaching, now is the time for residents to prepare their homes and properties to reduce the risk of bushfire and help protect lives, property and the wider community.
As a property owner, you have a responsibility to take reasonable steps to reduce fire hazards on your land. A well-prepared property is easier to defend, more likely to survive a bushfire and less likely to place neighbouring properties at risk.
Council will begin its annual bushfire hazard reduction inspections in November. Properties will be assessed for potential fire hazards and notices may be issued where works are required to reduce fuel loads and improve fire safety.
Don’t wait for an inspection notice to start preparing.
How to prepare your property
There are a number of simple steps you can take now:
- Mow or slash grass to below 100 mm.
- Remove flammable materials from around your home and outbuildings.
- Clean leaves and debris from gutters.
- Clear dead vegetation, fallen branches and undergrowth.
- Store firewood well away from buildings.
- Make sure your property number is clearly visible from the road.
- Trim vegetation along driveways and access tracks to allow emergency vehicle access. The CFS recommends a minimum clearance of 3.5 metres wide and 3.5 metres high.
- Review your home and contents insurance to ensure adequate cover.
Property preparation needs to be maintained throughout Fire Danger Season, particularly after periods of strong spring growth.
If you own property in the district but live elsewhere, consider arranging a contractor early and planning regular maintenance throughout the season.
Even if your bushfire plan is to leave early, preparing your property can help reduce risks and improve its chances of withstanding a bushfire.
