DIT project update: Main South Road overtaking lanes

The South Australian Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) has provided an update on the Main South Road Upgrades project between Normanville and Cape Jervis.

DIT is delivering three new overtaking lanes along Main South Road to improve safety and traffic flow for local residents, tourists and freight operators, while supporting future growth in the region.

Current works

According to DIT, earthworks and drainage works at Wirrina Cove, Second Valley and Cape Jervis are nearing completion, with pavement construction and asphalt surfacing to commence soon. Upcoming activities include:

  • drainage installation
  • pavement construction
  • completion of earthworks and rock excavation at Second Valley
  • continued transport of earthworks material to the Wirrina Cove stockpile site until early October.

Construction hours

Works are expected to continue from September 2026 until early 2027. DIT advises that construction hours are:

  • Monday to Friday: 7 am to 6 pm
  • Every second weekend:
    • Saturday: 7 am to 5 pm
    • Sunday: 7 am to 5 pm.

Traffic impacts

DIT advises that higher than average rainfall has affected the construction program, resulting in weekend works being required every second weekend until the end of 2026.

Traffic is currently operating under shuttle-flow conditions through work areas to enable construction activities to be undertaken safely behind barriers. Motorists may experience delays and are encouraged to follow traffic management directions and road signage.
