Census Night is Tuesday 11 August 2026

Census night is Tuesday 11 August. If you know where you’ll be on Census night, you can complete the Census as soon as you get your instructions.

Most households will get instructions on how to complete the Census online. If you prefer a paper form, you can request one on the Census website or by calling the automated paper form request service on 1800 130 250.

Some households will receive a Census paper form in the mail or have one delivered by Census field staff. These households will still be able to complete their Census online if they prefer.

Everyone in your household on Census night needs to be included on the Census form, including visitors and babies.

If you’re travelling or working away within Australia, you’ll need to complete a Census form wherever you’re staying on Census night. If someone is completing the Census form at your usual address, you’ll need to be marked as ‘away’ but usually living at the dwelling.

Information from the Census helps governments, businesses and not for profit organisations across the country make decisions. It informs planning for schools, health care, transport and infrastructure.

It is also used by community groups to help plan local services for individuals, families and communities.

In the Census, every answer matters. Help us understand what Australia needs now and into the future.
