Bin lid colours changing for new and replacement bins
The colours of some kerbside bin lids are changing to align with a new national standard but there is no need to replace your existing bin lids.
The national standard, AS4123, establishes consistent colours for different waste streams across Australia to make waste sorting and recycling easier.
Under the new standard:
- General landfill waste – red (previously blue)
- Recycling – yellow (unchanged)
- FOGO (food organics and garden organics) – lime green (previously dark green)
What does this mean for residents?
Existing blue-lidded landfill bins and dark green-lidded FOGO bins will continue to be collected as normal.
Fleurieu Regional Waste Authority (FRWA) and Council will not undertake a universal bin lid changeover and residents and businesses do not need to purchase new lids.
The new colours will be introduced gradually through the normal replacement of bins and lids at the end of their useful life. This means you will see both the old and new colours in the community for many years to come.
This approach helps avoid unnecessary plastic waste and minimises costs for residents, businesses and councils.
Exceptional Circumstances bins
Exceptional Circumstances (EC) bins will now be identified by a current sticker on the front of the bin rather than a different-coloured lid.
