Welcome Toto!
Hosted by the Yankalilla District Historical Museum Committee, the event celebrated local history, palaeontology and community collaboration. Special guest Dr Aaron Camens, lecturer in Palaeontology at Flinders University, shared fascinating insights into the megafauna that once roamed our region, even bringing along real Diprotodon specimens to help bring the past to life.
The project was led by the Yankalilla District Memorial Museum, which raised funds for the life-sized model through local fundraising efforts and a generous donation from the Yankalilla Community Op Shop. Now proudly standing outside the Fleurieu Coast Visitor Centre, this impressive replica has already become a popular attraction for both visitors and locals, keen to snap a photo and learn more about its prehistoric origins.
This installation is a shining example of what can be achieved when passionate community members work together with the District Council of Yankalilla towards a shared vision.
If you happen to be passing by after sunset, don’t miss Toto lit up under night skies, a spectacular sight and a beacon of local storytelling brought to life. A big shoutout must go to our Depot team for their hard work in preparing the site and delivering such impactful landscaping. Their attention to detail and pride in the project helped ensured a professional and welcoming finish to this unique installation.
And the experience doesn’t end outside. Inside the Yankalilla District Historical Museum, visitors can view a real fossilised Diprotodon bone discovered right here in the region. A dedicated display offers even more information for those curious to learn about these fascinating creatures and the ancient environment they once called home.
For those looking to take a piece of the experience home, a selection of Toto-inspired souvenirs is available for purchase inside the Fleurieu Coast Visitor Centre. From keepsakes to gifts, there's something for every curious explorer, and we’re looking forward to expanding our merchandise range in the coming months, so stay tuned!
