Melissa Rayner from Plastic Free SA Visits Yankalilla to Prepare Businesses for Single-Use Plastic Ban

On Tuesday, July 9th, Melissa Rayner from Plastic Free SA visited the District Council of Yankalilla to audit and provide crucial information to local businesses ahead of the upcoming single-use plastic legislation changes. Starting from September 1, 2024, South Australia will ban the sale, supply, and distribution of several single-use plastic items, including:

  • Plastic barrier bags
  • Thick supermarket and boutique-style plastic bags
  • Expanded polystyrene (EPS) consumer food and beverage containers
  • Plastic confetti and plastic balloon sticks/ties
  • Plastic bread tags
  • Single-use plastic beverage containers (including coffee cups)
  • Single-use plastic food containers

This initiative is part of a series of annual legislative changes that began on March 1, 2021, aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting environmental sustainability.

During her visit, Melissa provided valuable audits and expert advice on container suitability to six local businesses. She emphasised the importance of completing a free membership with Plastic Free SA to stay informed about the latest updates and available alternatives.
