Celebrating National Volunteer Week with Council's Outstanding Volunteers

National Volunteer Week (20th – 26th May) is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering. This special event is an opportunity to highlight the important role of volunteers in our community and invites people not currently volunteering to give it a go. National Volunteer Week 2024 is a celebration of the diverse passions and talents everyone brings to volunteering.

The District Council of Yankalilla would like to thank and acknowledge Council’s outstanding volunteers who support four important services in our community: the Yankalilla Council Transport Team, the Fleurieu Coast Visitor Centre, the Library and the Community Nursery. These programs would not be possible without the hard work and commitment of our volunteers and it cannot be understated how much Council appreciates all that they do.

We would also like to recognise and thank all the volunteers across the wider community, not just those who volunteer for Council. Volunteers play a critical role in the success of small towns, providing essential services and supporting local initiatives that make our communities stronger, healthier and more connected.

Community Transport Volunteer Team (CHSP)

Behind the wheel of our transportation service, the CHSP volunteers go above and beyond to ensure that individuals in our community receive the assistance they need when they need it the most. Driving is a risky business, but our volunteers willingly put themselves at risk to serve others, prioritising the needs of the community over their own. They understand the importance of their role as drivers, recognising that their actions can make a world of difference to those they serve.

Being a registered aged care provider, we are required to adhere to strict rules and guidelines, and our volunteers uphold these regulations with unwavering dedication. From maintaining confidentiality to communicating effectively with clients of all backgrounds, our volunteers exemplify professionalism and integrity in everything they do.

Our CHSP volunteers demonstrate patience daily, especially when supporting clients with mobility issues. They handle mobility aids with care and compassion, ensuring that every individual feels valued and respected. Punctuality and reliability are non-negotiable, as our volunteers understand the importance of being there for those who rely on our services.

Above all else, safety is paramount. The CHSP volunteers are always mindful of client safety, taking every precaution to ensure a smooth and secure journey for all.

Thank you to the CHSP volunteers for your time and the exemplary service that you deliver. This essential service would not be possible without you.

The Yankalilla Library volunteer team is a determined group of who donate their time, skills, and enthusiasm to support our library staff. From reshelving returned items to providing vital Justice of the Peace services on a weekly basis, these volunteers are a welcome addition to the team.

They meticulously "weed" library collections, removing old stock or misfiled items to keep our shelves organised and up-to-date. The Yankalilla Library volunteers also play an important role in processing new inventory and restoring items, ensuring that our library remains a vibrant and dynamic hub of learning and adventure.

Our valued volunteers also support our children's programs, which are essential for our youngest library patrons and their families. For our adult patrons, the Yankalilla Library volunteers offer a diverse range of programs, from book clubs to crafting sessions, providing opportunities for connection and enrichment.

In addition, Yankalilla Library volunteers deliver items to home library customers who are unable to visit in person due to ill health or isolation. This personal touch not only provides access to library resources but also fosters a sense of connection and belonging within the community.

No matter the age or stage of life, library customers can always count on the warm and friendly assistance of our Yankalilla Library volunteers. Whether it's helping with digital technologies, tracing family history through our Local History services, or simply offering a listening ear, these volunteers go above and beyond to support our patrons.

Thank you to the Yankalilla Library volunteers who selflessly give their time and energy to support the Yankalilla Library and enrich our community.

Comprising 26 dedicated souls, the Fleurieu Coast Visitor Centre volunteer team is the backbone of our tourism industry, collectively contributing a staggering 39,936 hours of service each year. Their commitment goes beyond mere hours; it's about curating memorable moments and fostering a warm, welcoming atmosphere for the thousands of visitors who visit our region annually.

One of the team's primary roles is to serve as ambassadors for our region, providing invaluable assistance to over 8,000 visitors annually, whether in person, over the phone, or via email. From offering insider tips on must-see attractions, suggesting accommodation options, or booking multiple events or tours, these volunteers go above and beyond to ensure that every visitor's experience is nothing short of exceptional.

What sets this team apart is their unwavering dedication to continuous improvement. As part of their training, volunteers have the unique opportunity to experience firsthand some of our region's premium visitor attractions. These "Famils," which take place four times a year, let them immerse themselves in the distinct characteristics of each tourist operator, gaining vital insights to improve the experience of visitors.

Over the past year, the team has explored hidden gems like Lessismore Farm, savoured the flavours of Fleurieu Gin, and revelled in the tranquillity of Anacotilla Springs Farm. They've ventured into new territories with Boathouse Cottage, Aqua Blue, and The Backyard Universe, expanding their knowledge to enrich the visitor journey.

Their dedication to community participation has not gone unnoticed. The District Council of Yankalilla takes immense pride in the Fleurieu Coast Visitor Centre volunteer team, recognising them as true ambassadors of our region's hospitality and charm.
