School Holiday Science Fun at Yankalilla Library

Once again we are thrilled to share the wonderful success of our recent School Holiday Science Fun events at the Yankalilla Library. Throughout the July School Holidays, families gathered at the library to embark on exciting journeys into the world of science, exploration, and creativity. The library was buzzing with excitement as families immersed themselves in the fascinating worlds of Things That Fly, and Shadows of the Prehistoric Past, and unleashed their creativity with Pop Stick Creations and a Science Expo.

Children, along with their parents, delved into the art of designing and flying kites, whirly copters and even flying saucers! Our young scientists put their imaginations to work, crafting unique flying objects and then ventured into the park to test their gravity-defying designs.

Our time-travelling adventure, Shadows of the Prehistoric Past, immersed families in a captivating experience with Professor Flint. With his enthralling knowledge of dinosaurs and fossils, Professor Flint kept everyone entertained and amazed with his storytelling and action songs. It was a thrilling journey back in time, exploring the mysteries of the prehistoric era.

During our Pop Stick Creations and Science Expo events, creativity and ingenuity were on full display. Children took on the challenge of building catapults and constructing sturdy bridges using pop sticks, pushing the boundaries of their engineering skills. Their determination and teamwork resulted in some remarkable structures that stood strong.

At the Science Expo, our budding scientists were immersed in various experiments. From creating tornados in a bottle to crafting blu tack boats that floated, they delved into the captivating world of hands-on science activities. Moreover, the age-old question of "Which spins best, a hard-boiled or raw egg?" was answered through their engaging experiments.

Over the course of the four events, we had a fantastic turnout of 33 families, and a total of  64 children enthusiastically participated in these hands-on science adventures. The library also gave away 40 science-focused activity bags in the first 5 days of the July School Holidays. These bags were thoughtfully designed to inspire curiosity and provide further opportunities for children to engage with science beyond the library. Thank you to all of the families who joined us for these events. Stay tuned for more exciting events and activities at Yankalilla Library!
