School Holiday Programs at Yankalilla Library are back!
In the past, because the Yankalilla District is such a holiday destination, the library’s school holiday programs have been popular with families visiting the area and locals alike. Now with the library functioning in our new space, we are happy to see that our holiday programming is again appealing to both locals and those children visiting with their families or spending time with their grandparents.
Our April School Holiday Program had a marine science theme and we were delighted to have 21 families visit with 41 children who thoroughly enjoyed the activities we offered.
During the first week, the session was based around Sea Sprouts: jellyfish and sea anemone creations, with children engaging in sea songs and stories and having fun creating their own sea creatures.
At the second session we invited Janine Baker, a Marine Ecologist, to talk about sea stars. She presented interesting facts about various species found in South Australia, especially those from around Rapid Bay and Second Valley. Janine emphasised the importance of not removing these creatures from their environment. The children then created their own sea stars. Additionally, the second week saw the children making origami sea creatures. Finally, in the last session, budding artists designed, shaped and painted a 3D masterpiece.
During the school holiday period, we also gave away 40 activity bags, each featuring craft activities such as making a yarn turtle, a penguin racing game and tangram pictures. We were happy to see the bags were well received and we hope that they provided some creative fun for the children during their holiday break.
Thank you to all who attended our holiday program and picked up activity bags. We hope to see you all again soon.
