Fleurieu Coast Free Bikes

Introduction

An initiative to provide free bike hire to residents and visitors to Yankalilla via 'nodes' currently located in Yankalilla and on the way to Normanville.

This scheme will be rolled out in June 2017.

The Fleurieu Coast Free Bikes scheme is provided by the District Council Of Yankalilla and supported by the Department of Planning, Transport And Infrastructure’s Community Grants funding.

We are absolutely thrilled that Yankalilla's Men's Shed has partnered with the District Council of Yankalilla to provide repair and maintenance services to the bikes!

Where can I hire a bike?

  • The Visitor Information Centre, 163 Main South Road, Yankalilla
  • Jetty Caravan Park Normanville, Jetty Road Normanville.

How much does it cost to hire a bike?

Nothing! There is no cost to hire a bike.

You will need to complete and sign a Hire Form and will be expected to leave current, valid photo ID as a deposit.

Note: There are no exceptions to this requirement, therefore if you are unwilling to leave current, valid, photo ID, we will be unable to provide you this service.

Charges DO APPLY for stolen, lost or damaged equipment - see below for further details!

What Photo ID is accepted?

  • Drivers licence (with photo)
  • Passport
  • Australian Proof of Age Card

Note all ID provided will be kept at the hiring node and must be current and valid and Photo ID is required from ALL ADULTS using the service.

Costs Associated with the loss or damage

The following charges are applied when items are stolen, lost or returned irreparably damaged:

  • Padlock - $35.00
  • Helmet (all sizes) - $60.00
  • Mountain Bike (all Black and Green bikes) - $1,300.00
  • Retro Style Bikes - $900.00
  • Mountain Bike (all Black and Red bikes) - $750.00

The charge for not returning your bike and items on the same day of hire is $25.00 per night.

Is there a minimum age to hire a bike?

All children must be supervised by an adult, we have a selection of bikes available for children, however there are currently no bikes with trainer wheels.

How long can I hire a bike for?

Bikes are hired on a "first come first served" basis and the time you can hire the bike is determined by the operational hours of the node you are hiring from that day.

Be sure to double check the latest return time as an overnight charge is applied should a bike not be returned (and you wont be able to get your ID returned).

Note: we are unable to provide an "out of hours" return.

Can I book a bike in advance?

We do not allow this to happen and wish to run the scheme on a first come first served basis.  Early bird will get the worm!

What if I get a puncture or mechanical failure?

Please remember the Fleurieu Coast Free Bikes service is a free service to our community, we do not provide a "pick up Service".  Therefore it remains the responsibility of the hirer to ensure all bikes and equipment is returned to the node it was hired from before the end of the day.

You can always call the District Council of Yankalilla on (08) 8558 0200 for assistance or advice on how to get back to the location where you hired your bike from ... however please do not expect Council to be able to pick you up.

Safety

It is a requirement of the law to ride with a helmet and a range of helmets of varying sizes is available.

Additionally, bike locks are available which means you can hop off your bike to shop or go for lunch confident that your bike will be where you left it when you return.

Can I hire a bike overnight/multi-day?

This is not the intent of the scheme.  The service is to promote health and well-being for the community.  Should bikes be hired out to individuals for multiple days, it will result in a reduction in the number of bikes available to other members of the public.
