Refugee Welcome Zone

On 18 June 2019 the District Council of Yankalilla declared the district a Refugee Welcome Zone.

A Refugee Welcome Zone is a Local Government Area which has made a commitment in spirit to welcoming refugees into the community, upholding the human rights of refugees, demonstrating compassion for refugees and enhancing cultural and religious diversity in the community. Refugee Welcome Zones are an initiative of the Refugee Council of Australia.

The Fleurieu Refugee Support Group meets regularly to discuss refugee issues that we might address as a community.  Donations from individuals and groups in the community, especially the local White Caps swimmers, have assisted with projects to support refugees and asylum seekers. These have included:

  • providing respite, emergency and brief holiday accommodation
  • assisting with employment and educational needs
  • promoting opportunities to share culture and raise community awareness of refugee issues
