The History

In April 2005, the first Leafy Sea Dragon Festival took place in the Yankalilla district of the Fleurieu Peninsula.

It began as a festival of the environment, arts and culture of the Yankalilla area, and to celebrate the leafy sea dragon and raise awareness of its significance as South Australia's official sea emblem.

A resounding success, it attracted over 7 000 participants, including 4 000 visitors. Strong community support, a diverse range of artistic, educational and cultural events and enthusiastic participation by visitors and locals contributed to the high quality achieved for the first festival.

Past Leafy Sea Dragon Festivals

More than 10,000 people enjoyed both the 2007 & 2009 festivals. There were over 60 events in 2007 and over 70 in 2009. These included events within these themes, sculpture installations, artist trail, art exhibitions, workshops, short story competition, poetry readings, street party, live music and dance, story telling, local gourmet food and wine, educational expositions on the leafy sea dragon...etc
