Festival Fleurieu celebrates three award wins

Yankalilla’s biennial arts event has just been named joint winner of the 2016 Best Community Event in the statewide Australia Day Awards.

Festival Fleurieu is adding formal recognition to its growing reputation, with three recent award successes.

Yankalilla’s biennial arts event has just been named joint winner of the 2016 Best Community Event in the statewide Australia Day Awards, after receiving a Bronze Commendation at the 2015 SA Tourism Industry Awards in November.

The Chairman of the Festival Board, Greg Mackie OAM, accepted the latest award at a ceremony at Government House today (Wednesday 20th January).

“This is the reward for a lot of hard work by a lot of people and a reflection of the real community spirit that exists on the Fleurieu Coast,” Mr Mackie said.

"We took some risks with this festival, but everyone from the artists to the volunteers, sponsors and partners rolled up their sleeves and went to work to create a community celebration that has something for everyone. The response has been fantastic."

Founded by local artists and councillors, the event was known as the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival until a change of name and direction in 2014.  Festival Fleurieu has flourished by fostering new cash and in-kind partnerships, expanding the reach of the program and embracing the marketing power of social media.

Mr Mackie dedicated today’s Australia Day Award to the late John Sanderson, a former Yankalilla District Councillor.

"John was a passionate and vocal advocate for having a strong local festival and he worked hard to ensure it received Council support, sometimes in very creative ways," he said.

“He would be thrilled that we have proved just how important artists and festivals can be in fostering community pride and participation as well as promoting the region and business.”

The Festival Fleurieu  was also recently recognised in the Best Community Event category in the Yankalilla Council Australia Day Awards.
