IT'S the debate that divides South Australians every summer - which is our most beautiful beach?

Now it's also split the experts with Second Valley on the Fleurieu Peninsula and the wild length of the Coorong vying for the title of SA's best stretch of sand in a new book, 101 Best Australian Beaches, by Professor Andy Short and Brad Farmer.

The pair took their research seriously, visiting between them every one of Australia's 11,761 beaches, allowing them to compile a comprehensive analysis.

Farmer chose Second Valley as his top South Australian beach - while Professor Short went for the Coorong.

"There are just some places that you go to and it has a bit of a feeling of the land time forgot," said Mr Farmer, who is a pioneer of coastal preservation and founder of the Australian Surfrider Foundation.

"Obviously, people are looking for clean water and clean sand - that is predominantly what defines a best beach, then there are the quirky elements . . . it has a jetty and that has a lot of sex appeal for people.

"The fact that it has that iconic leafy sea dragon also makes the area very attractive and there are psychedelic colours on the rock formations."

He added: "It's one of the those beaches where you can go exploring."

Thirteen South Australian beaches were in the book. However in their top ten lists they could only agree on Crescent Head in NSW. Mr Farmer said that some beaches like Bondi and Surfers Paradise were renowned stretches of sand.

"But they're not everyone's idea of a great beach," he said.

"These beaches are commercialised, noisy, less than clean and the beach experience may suit some tourists who want a quick fix - but for the aficionados, they'll find in this book beaches that will change (their lives) and how you see beaches. That's why Professor Short and myself - who have spent a lifetime at Australian beaches - very carefully listed these beaches with the view that they will please everyone."

Catherine Brown, 29, has lived all her life in Second Valley and said her family was always at the beach.

"It is small and secluded, it has a jetty and the kids love to go crabbing," she said, adding: "We love it - we always have."

Other SA beaches featured in 101 Best Australian Beaches include Glenelg Beach, Port Noarlunga and Snellings Beach on Kangaroo Island - to name a few.
